Hero turned villain Ret General Vitalis Zvinavashe
Former Zimbabwe army commander Ret. General Vitalis (Sheba Gava) Zvinavashe is no more.
He passed away quietly on Tuesday 10 March 2009 at Manyame Airbase hospital.
In 2002 the late Ret General Zvinavashe scripted Zimbabwe’s doomsday when he appeared on Zimbabwe Broadcasting Television flanked by current Army Commander General Constantine Chiwenga, Air Marshall Perence Shiri, CIO Director Elisha Muzonzini, Police Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri and Director of Prisons General Paradzai Zimondi to declare that he and his colleagues in field command of Security operatives will never...salute a President without Liberation War credentials.
President Mugabe was facing the stern challenge for the Presidency of Morgan Tsvangirai who did not actively participate in the Liberation struggle against British colonialism.
That declaration was to harden Zimbabwean hearts against Zanu PF misrule and impunity and they voted overwhelmingly for Tsvangirai in an election the results of which had to be massively rigged by Registrar General Tobaiwa Mudede who introduced a supplementary voter’s roll with 500 000 ghost voters.
President Mugabe was declared winner of the election by 480000 votes.
In 2008 Zvinavashe contested and lost the Gutu Constituency Senatorial elections on a Zanu PF ticket to MDC’s Empire Makamure.
When shell shocked Zanu PF mobilised the Military Commanders and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to rig the elections through frivolous and vexatious applications for re-counts Retired General Zvinavashe who by the time was no longer in doubt as to what Zimbabweans felt about Zanu PF conceded defeat and urged his other colleagues in Zanu PF who had lost the elections to do likewise.
General Zvinavashe was a filthy rich entrepreneur who made a fortune from the DRC war.
He owns vast tracts of land in the Tynwald area where his clandestine business operations were directed from.
Operating from the wooded area between Kuwadzana and Warren Park D and just South of Dr Jaravaza’s Mansion on the Bulawayo road Kuwadzana round about Retired Zvinavashe has trucks that ply the DRC Zimbabwe route transporting Coal and agricultural exports north while returning with diamonds and plywood products.
His cousin Kurotwi caused mayhem in the coal Industry when he rose to become chairman of the Coal Merchants Association fronting the retired General.
His private school in Tynwald is the most expensive institution of learning in Zimbabwe.
Ironically his funeral has occurred in the same week Zimbabwe has been plunged into mourning the popular Premier’s wife Susan who was killed in a road traffic accident that despite explanations that rule out foul play remains very much suspicious.
The liberation credentials of a veteran war General who sacrificed everything to drive out imperialists but turned against the people he had liberated to become their oppressor is being overshadowed by the liberation efforts of a democratic heroine’s sacrifices to liberate people from Zanu PF hegemony.
